The Israeli military says an Israeli in the West Bank has shot a Palestinian who tried to stab him.

Saturday's incident took place in a Jewish neighborhood of Hebron, a frequent flashpoint where a few hundred Jews live in close proximity to tens of thousands of Palestinians.

The military says the Israeli shot and wounded the Palestinian before the man could harm him. The Palestinian was being evacuated for treatment.

Over the past month, eight Israelis were killed in Palestinian attacks, most of them stabbings. In that time, 31 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire, including 14 labeled by Israel as attackers, and the rest in clashes with Israeli troops.
