Charles Moore's official biography of late prime minister Margaret Thatcher has been nominated on the shortlist for the prestigious Samuel Johnson Prize, it was announced Monday.

"Margaret Thatcher: The Authorized Biography, Volume One: Not for Turning" goes up against five other books, including one exploring the ecological significance of the bumblebee, for the non-fiction award.

Also making the list are David Crane's "Empires of the Dead", "Return of a King" by William Dalrymple and "The Pike" by Lucy Hughes-Hallett.

Conservationist Dave Goulson is nominated for his bee tribute "A Sting In The Tale" while "Under Another Sky" by Charlotte Higgins completes the line-up.

Chair of the judges Martin Rees called the books "very different".

"These finely written, highly accessible and stimulating books all deserve a wide readership," he added.

The winner of the ??20,000 prize, which was won last year by Wade Davis for his book about Everest explorer George Mallory, will be revealed on November 4.
