MADRID (AP) — The Prince of Asturias Foundation says it has awarded the archaeological team that unearthed China's Terracotta Warriors its Social Science prize for 2010.

The foundation said Wednesday the warriors are "one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century" and constitute a rich source of information about Chinese civilization.

More than 1,000 of the warriors, dating back some 2,200 years, were discovered in the 1970s buried around the tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang, who ruled from 221-210 B.C.

The foundation hands out eight awards each year in categories including arts, literature, communications, sports and scientific research. The awards are considered among the most prestigious in Spain and are presented by Prince Felipe each fall in Oviedo.
