Teachers in Chile vote to end 7-week strike that kept hundreds of thousands out of class

Thousands of teachers in Chile are ending one of their longest strikes in decades, which protested a bill in Congress that would tie pay to performance.

Teachers' association chief Jaime Gajardo says members voted overwhelming on Monday to end the walkout that began June 1. Instead, he says the unions will negotiate with the Ministry of Education.

The walkout shuttered more than 1,300 public schools nationwide, keeping an estimated 300,000 students out of class.

The bill was introduced by President Michelle Bachelet, who campaigned on promises to overhaul Chile's education system. It would tie salaries to performance reviews and exams throughout a teacher's career. The unions balked, saying the requirements would force teachers to focus on exams and not on teaching.
