Syria: Child killed in rebel mortar attack on Syrian capital

Published December 13, 2015

Associated Press

Syria's state-run news agency says a child has been killed and three people wounded by mortar shells that struck the capital Damascus.

SANA says Sunday's shells were fired by gunmen entrenched in an eastern suburb of the capital.

The suburb known as Eastern Ghouta is held by rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad. The fighters often launch mortars into Damascus, Assad's seat of power.

On Saturday, two civilians were killed and six others wounded by 15 mortar shells that landed in Damascus.

Syrian warplanes carried out airstrikes on suspected rebel positions near Damascus in response.
