Swedish court acquits 2 in Uzbek imam shooting

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A Swedish court has acquitted an Uzbek man and woman of attempted murder charges in the shooting of an imam who fled Uzbekistan after criticizing the country's regime.

Prosecutors had accused the two of helping the suspected gunman, who is still at large, plan and carry out the Feb. 22 attack on Obidkhon Sobitkhony in Stromsund, a town in northern Sweden.

The Ostersund district court said there was no reason to doubt the attack was politically motivated but said there was not enough evidence linking the defendants to the crime. Their names have not been published in line with Swedish privacy rules.

The imam, Obid-kori Nazarov, survived the shooting but was hospitalized with serious injuries and has not regained consciousness.
