Surfer recovering after Australia shark attack

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A surfer is recovering after being attacked by a shark off a beach in southern Australia.

South Australia state police say the 47-year-old man was surfing with friends and family off Back Beach on the state's west coast on Tuesday when the shark bit into his arm and shoulder. His fellow surfers helped him to shore. He was in stable condition Wednesday at a hospital in the state capital of Adelaide.

Police say they suspect the shark was a bronze whaler.

Sharks are common in Australian waters, though fatal attacks are rare. Last month, a 24-year-old surfer died after being bitten in half by a shark off Western Australia.
