Supporters, opponents of gold mining operation in northern Greece clash; injuries reported

Published May 21, 2015

Associated Press

Police say hundreds of supporters and opponents of a gold mining operation in northern Greece have clashed despite efforts to separate them.

Police say more than 2,000 supporters and about 850 opponents of the mine were involved. No arrests were made.

The mine operation in Halkidiki peninsula, by Vancouver, Canada-based Eldorado Gold Corp, has sharply divided residents, with some fearing environmental damage and a drop in tourism. Others welcomed the nearly 2,000 jobs it provides at a time of economic crisis.

Both sides claim injuries among their ranks on Saturday. Police did not provide information.

The mining site has drawn demonstrations in the past, but it was the first time that supporters and opponents have clashed.
