Sudan's president replaces army general on US sanctions list for his role in Darfur war

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan's president has replaced five top army generals, including the deputy chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, who is on a U.S. sanctions list for his role in the Darfur conflict.

Sudan's army spokesman, Sawarmy Khaled, was quoted as saying on state media that the five retired.

Deputy armed forces chief Awad Ibn Auf was one of two officials who had assets frozen in the U.S. in 2007 for planning attacks and supporting militiamen responsible for atrocities in Darfur. A rebel leader was also subjected to the penalties, which also prohibited any U.S. business dealings. Up to 300,000 people were killed in seven years of conflict.

Sudan has faced various U.S. sanctions since 1997 for supporting terrorism and human rights violations.
