Sudan: 7 killed in military helicopter crash

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Sudan's official news agency says seven army officers were killed when their helicopter crashed in western Sudan.

SUNA quoted military spokesman Col. Sawarmy Khalid Saad as saying that the helicopter was on an "administrative mission" over the western region of Darfur.

He said Monday that a technical failure caused the crash. Seven officers were killed and two others were injured.

The military gave no further details of the crash, the malfunction or the identities of the officers.

The Darfur area has witnessed one of the bloodiest conflicts in the region. It began in 2003 when ethnic African rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government they accused of discrimination and neglect. The U.N. says 300,000 people died and 2.7 million fled their homes.
