Students protest at South African universities

South African university students are again protesting on campuses across the country.

On Friday, the University of Pretoria shut two of its campuses after student members of an opposition party clashed with an Afrikaner cultural group over a proposal to remove Afrikaans as an official teaching language. South African media reported that several students were arrested.

The University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg said 14 students were arrested for violating a court order. The university said the arrested students were involved in allegedly setting a bus on fire and burning a mattress outside the library to protest school fees.

Earlier this week, students at the University of Cape Town built shacks on campus and burned artwork during protests over lack of student housing.
