State Department cheers release of Cuban activist Ferrer, says he shouldn't have been jailed

HAVANA (AP) — The U.S. is applauding the release of a Cuban human rights activist, but says he should not have been jailed for 11 months while he waited for his day in court.

Darsy Ferrer was found guilty Tuesday of purchasing black-market cement and released on time served.

Supporters say Ferrer was targeted for his political views and punished for a crime that Cuban authorities often overlook.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters Wednesday in Washington that the U.S. considers Ferrer's release a positive development.

Crowley added, "We hope that the Cuban government will continue to take measures demonstrating the increased respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms."
