Spain to ask Venezuela to extradite convicted member of armed Basque group ETA

Published July 23, 2015

Associated Press

The Spanish government says it will ask Venezuela to extradite a convicted member of the armed Basque group ETA.

Deputy premier Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said Friday that Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos is wanted for a trial on charges of praising terrorism in a letter following his 2008 release.

De Juana Chaos served 21 years in prison for ETA attack convictions. He disappeared from Northern Ireland in 2010 while appealing a Spanish extradition order.

The National Court last month asked the government to seek his extradition after a Spanish newspaper published a photo of him outside a liquor store in Venezuela.

ETA killed 829 people in its four-decade-long Basque homeland campaign. It declared a permanent cease-fire in 2011, but hasn't disbanded.
