South Sudan ratifies Convention on the Rights of the Child; US, Somalia only outliers left

South Sudan has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international human rights treaty meant to protect children's rights to health, education and freedom from discrimination.

The U.N. on Monday welcomed the move and said only the United States and Somalia have not ratified the treaty.

The U.S. has never been able to get enough required support from Congress to ratify the treaty. Some members of Congress fear that such treaties could overrule existing U.S. laws.

The treaty has been ratified by 195 nations.

The U.N. statement notes that "Somalia is in the process of finalizing the process to ratify the Convention."
