South Africa police identify Cape Town airport shooter as 1 of their own

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

South African police say a man who killed himself in Cape Town's international airport was a police constable who got into an argument with a woman at an airport restaurant.

Police. Capt. Frederick van Wyk wrote in an email Thursday that the shooter went to the restaurant and spoke to his female partner on Wednesday evening. He says the 33-year-old constable opened fire during the altercation, injuring her and two employees in the airport food court. He then shot himself.

The area was cordoned off after the shooting, but officials say there was minimal disruption to airport operations.
