South Africa police arrest 2nd suspect for gang-rape of teen that led to national outcry

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

South African police say they have arrested a second suspect for the gang-rape of a teenager who was mutilated and left for dead on a building construction site last week in a case that angered the nation.

The 17-year-old in the Western Cape lived long enough to identify one of her attackers, a 22-year-old. Police already arrested him and on Thursday said they have arrested a second, 21-year-old suspect. They promised more arrests soon though it is not known how many attackers were involved.

The outcry over Saturday's rape led President Jacob Zuma to comment.

In a statement released Thursday he "vowed that government would never rest until the perpetrators and all those who rape and abuse women and children, are meted with the maximum justice that the law allows."
