South Africa: Czech man unscathed after weapon rigged behind car license plate fires on him

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

It sounds like a lethal gadget in a James Bond movie: Remote-controlled gun barrels rigged behind the license plate of a car that spray bullets at an unsuspecting target.

But South African police say this was a real-life attempt to kill Radovan Krejcir, a Czech man who was accused of planning a murder and other crimes in his country and has been linked to underworld figures in Johannesburg.

Krejcir was unhurt in Wednesday's attack, which peppered his bullet-proof Mercedes with impact marks from the gunfire. The empty, parked vehicle where the weapon was hidden then burst into flames, possibly destroying evidence.

Krejcir eluded a police raid on his Czech villa in 2005 and later turned up in South Africa, where he is fighting extradition.
