Small blast in Spain's Basque region causes minor damage; no injuries

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

MADRID (AP) — A Spanish police official says a small explosive device has detonated in an industrial area outside the Basque capital and caused minor damage but no injuries.

The official with the Basque regional interior ministry says the blast early Thursday bore the hallmarks of street violence usually associated with young supporters of the violent separatist group ETA, which announced a cease-fire on Sept. 5.

The official told The Associated Press the device was a butane gas canister of the kind used for camping stoves with a firework-style rocket attached to it. It exploded in an industrial area on the outskirts of Vitoria, the Basque regional capital.

The official spoke to AP on condition of anonymity in line with department rules.
