Slovenia's government faces fall after PM loses leadership of her party

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Slovenia's government faces likely collapse after Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek, whose government has saved the small EU state from an international bailout, lost her party leadership.

Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic was chosen the leader of Positive Slovenia party early Saturday. Bratusek has said before the vote that she cannot remain the prime minister without her party support.

Bratusek's three coalition partners in the center-left government have said they would step out of the cabinet if Jankovic, who is under investigation for corruption, becomes party leader. If the government collapses, early elections are likely.

Bratusek took office in March last year after the previous, center-right government fell over allegations of corruption and slow reform. Her government has cut public spending and started to heal ailing banks to avoid EU bailout.
