Slovakia mulls possible trial of Nazi-era suspect

Published November 20, 2014

A Slovak court is mulling whether to ask Hungary to extradite a 97-year-old suspected of abusing Jews and deporting them during the Holocaust.

Laszlo Csatary was arrested in Hungary earlier this month and charged with "unlawful torture of human beings."

Slovak authorities are considering whether to request his extradition because Csatary's alleged crimes took place in Kosice, a former Hungarian city now in Slovakia.

Justice Minister Tomas Borec said Monday that a district court in Kosice has received a file on Csatary and will decide whether to ask Hungary to extradite him. It wasn't clear when it would make its decision.

Some Jewish leaders in Slovakia see advantages for a trial in Slovakia because there are still living witnesses in Kosice who could testify against him there.
