Sex-assault videos stir anger in violent Mexican state

Published March 31, 2016

Associated Press

A private university in Mexico has suspended a student who allegedly helped tape sex scenes that the victim claims were a rape, amid complaints the government is ignoring sexual abuses by the rich and powerful.

The Veracruz state branch of the Mexico Valley University said the student made or distributed a video showing a grinning young man apparently having sex with a barely conscious woman. The woman said she had been unconscious and could not remember the events. Her family says the man is the son of a government employee.

The case follows officials' failure to act on accusations that the sons of prominent figures raped a 17-year-old woman in January 2015. It has gained unusual force because the victim's family has a tape of the alleged perpetrators apologizing.
