Serbia's Balkan neighbors to boycott president's inauguration

Serbia's Balkan neighbors are boycotting President Tomislav Nikolic's inauguration, claiming statements by the new Serb leader have reignited regional tensions.

The leaders of Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Macedonia are not attending Monday's ceremony as Nikolic has denied the Srebrenica massacre, in which Bosnian Serb forces killed some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in 1995, was genocide.

They are also angry that he has claimed Vukovar, a Croatian town destroyed by Serb forces during Croatia's war for independence in the 1990s, is actually a Serbian city.

Nikolic's statements have fueled fears that his surprise victory in a May 20 presidential runoff vote may threaten postwar reconciliation in the Balkans.
