Serb police arrest 2 for arms smuggling, confiscate explosives, automatic weapons

Published December 16, 2015

Associated Press

Serbian police say they have broken up an arms-smuggling operation, arrested two suspects and confiscated explosives and automatic guns.

Police said Wednesday the months-long operation involved special police troops who found the weapons stashed in a car in the northern city of Novi Sad.

Police say the weapons impounded late on Tuesday included three kilograms (6.6 pounds) of high-power plastic explosives, two detonators, nine hand grenades, five automatic weapons and ammunition.

The illegal arms trade has flourished in the Balkans since the wars of the 1990s. Several Serbian-made guns have been found during or after the November terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Serbian police in November reported breaking up an arms trafficking ring with France.
