Security officials say suspected US drone strike kills 4 militants in northwest Pakistan

Published May 04, 2016

Associated Press

Officials in Pakistan say a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed four militants near the country's northwestern border with Afghanistan.

The officials say the strike Monday targeted a suspected militant hideout in the Shawal area of Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information to journalists. Their account could not be independently corroborated as journalists are not allowed to work in tribal areas. American officials do not discuss the strikes, which anger many here over their civilian casualties.

The tribal region is home to both local and al-Qaida-linked foreign militants. The Pakistani army launched a major offensive there mid-June. On Dec. 16, Taliban militants responded by killing 150 people at an army-run school in Peshawar.
