Scotland's pro-independence party scores big gains in vote

The pro-independence Scottish National Party has secured a third term in government with an overwhelming victory in parliamentary elections.

Just 20 months after losing the independence referendum the SNP has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity.

In contrast, the socialist Labour Party scored their worst-ever result, losing out to the right-wing Conservatives for the first time in 60 years.

Once the most dominant party in Scotland, Labour looks set to fall into fourth place behind the SNP, Conservatives and Liberal-Democrats.

With 59 results still to be declared Friday morning, the SNP had already won 57 out of 129 seats compared to the Conservatives with six, the Liberal-Democrats with four and three for Labour.

Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said the party had made history.
