Saudi ruler names former US envoy as spy chief

Saudi Arabia says it has replaced its intelligence chief with the country's former ambassador to Washington amid growing pockets of unrest in the kingdom.

The official Saudi Press Agency cited a royal decree shifting Prince Muqrin bin Abdul-Aziz from the powerful intelligence post to become a special adviser to King Abdullah.

No reason for the move was given Thursday, but it comes as Saudi authorities faces increasing protests and clashes with minority Shiite factions claiming discrimination by the Sunni leadership.

Prince Muqrin is replaced by Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who served as ambassador to the U.S. from 1983 to 2005.

Prince Bandar retains his role as secretary general of the National Security Council.
