Saudi police shoot dead wanted man in kingdom's restive east

Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry says police have shot to death a wanted man in the country's predominantly Shiite east.

An Interior Ministry statement carried early Thursday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency identified the dead man as Abdul-Rahim Ali Abdul-Rahim al-Faraj.

The ministry said the raid Wednesday in Awwamiya saw the suspects open fire first. It said the shootout wounded no civilians or security force members.

It said al-Faraj, his brother and others are wanted for killing security force members, robbery and on other charges.

The Sunni-rule kingdom's east has seen unrest since authorities executed a prominent Shiite cleric, Nimr al-Nimr, in January. That execution sparked violent protests in Shiite power Iran that damaged two Saudi diplomatic posts. Saudi Arabia then cut diplomatic ties to Iran.
