Rwanda dismisses rights group's assertions of government involvement in death of top editor

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — Rwanda's government has denied assertions by an international journalists' rights group that the government may have been involved in the shooting death of a journalist.

Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said Saturday that the government was not involved in Jean-Leonard Rugambage's death on Thursday. She calls the allegations "dishonest."

Rugambage's editor Jean-Bosco Gasasira says he was killed for linking the government to an unsuccessful June 21 shooting attempt against exiled Lt. Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa in South Africa.

Reporters Without Borders said Rugambage's death is a culmination of suppression of criticism by the Rwandan government ahead of an August national vote.
