Russian and Turkish foreign ministers meet to normalize ties

Published July 01, 2016

Russia's foreign minister has met his Turkish counterpart as the two nations move quickly to normalize relations following Turkey's apology for the downing of a Russian warplane last year.

Sergey Lavrov said Friday after meeting with Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu in the Black Sea resort of Sochi that Moscow and Ankara have agreed to restore their anti-terror cooperation and military contacts, which were cut when a Turkish jet shot down a Russian warplane at the Syrian border last November.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent the apology letter to Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Monday, the day before suicide bombers attacked the main airport in Istanbul. Putin called Erdogan on Wednesday to express his condolences for the airport attack and announced he was lifting the restrictions on tourism to Turkey.
