Russia scoffs at Arab League proposals

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Russia's foreign minister says there can be no talk of humanitarian corridors in Syria and accused the West of fueling the violence by supporting the Syrian opposition.

Sergey Lavrov was commenting on the Arab League's plan to seek a new U.N. resolution on Syria that will likely include a demand to allow access for humanitarian workers to the entire country.

Lavrov said Thursday the Western attempts to help oust Syrian President Bashar Assad and support for the opposition is fueling the conflict.

Russia, Syria's main protector and ally, has teamed with China to veto three United Nations draft resolutions that would impose sanctions on Assad's regime. Moscow has pushed for talks between Assad's regime and the opposition.
