Report: Rebels kill 11 policemen in India

A news report says suspected communist rebels have killed 11 police officers in an ambush in eastern India.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted senior police official Ram Nivas as saying that the rebel attack took place Friday in Bijapur district of troubled Chhattisgarh state.

The police officer could not be immediately reached on the phone. No other details were immediately available.

The region is a stronghold of Maoist rebels who are demanding land and jobs for the poor and often target government forces.

Inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, the rebels have fought the government for more than four decades in several Indian states. They have tapped into anger among the rural poor over being left out of the country's economic gains.
