Report: NZ raid in alleged plot to kill Fiji ruler

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

New Zealand authorities raided the home of a prominent Fijian in connection with a possible plot to assassinate Fiji's military ruler, Frank Bainimarama, a local television station reported Wednesday.

Former Fijian cabinet minister Rajesh Singh, who lives in Auckland, told New Zealand's ONE News that Security Intelligence Service agents this week seized his computer and phone. He said the agents connected the plot to former Fijian army Col. Ratu Tevita Mara, who lives in Tonga and recently visited Auckland. Both Singh and Mara told the station they knew nothing of any plot.

Bainimarama seized power in a 2006 coup and has been criticized internationally for failing to return the island nation to democracy. He has promised to hold elections in 2014.

Mara was once part of Bainimarama's inner circle but last year left the country by boat after being charged with sedition for allegedly trying to overthrow the regime. He has been an outspoken critic of Bainimarama since.

New Zealand authorities declined to comment on the raid.
