Report charges Thai government ignores torture allegations

Published February 10, 2016

Associated Press

A group of human rights organizations in southern Thailand has issued a report aimed at drawing public attention to what it says are complaints of torture by security forces that have not been addressed by authorities.

In a report released Wednesday, the Cross Cultural Foundation and two other agencies look at 54 cases of alleged psychological and physical torture in Thailand's deep south, where the government has been battling a Muslim separatist insurgency since 2004. It says the government has made no effort to address the issue despite previous complaints, and no perpetrator has ever been punished.

Government spokesman Winthai Suvaree said there is no evidence to back allegations of torture.
