Report: Austria presidential vote rerun could be postponed

Published September 09, 2016

Associated Press

Austria's APA news agency reports that a rerun of the country's presidential election could be postponed because of faulty voting cards.

Austria's highest court ruled in June that the election has to be repeated after the right-wing Freedom Party, whose candidate lost the vote, claimed gross irregularities in the absentee ballot count.

The rerun was due to be held Oct. 2.

APA on Friday cited unnamed government and parliamentary sources saying that a further delay was likely.

Interior minister Wolfgang Sobotka had earlier announced that he was considering postponing the vote. He has called a news conference for Monday morning to announce his decision.

Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer is running against left-leaning contender Alexander Van der Bellen to succeed Austrian President Heinz Fischer, whose term ended in July.
