Rebels in Central African Republic take 3 towns

A rebel spokesman says that fighters of the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity rebel group have taken three towns in the north of the Central African Republic.

Contacted on his satellite phone, rebel spokesman Col. Narkoyo said his fighters have occupied the remote towns of Ndele, Sam Ouandja and Ouadda since Monday.

"I confirm that the towns of Ndele, Sam Ouandja and Ouadda are under the control of the UFDR," said Narkoyo, who gave only his last name.

Narkoyo said his army had seized the towns in order to force the government to reconsider the April 13, 2007 accord. He said that six years after the peace accord, the government has not held up its end of the bargain and the UFDR fighters remain "in a miserable state."
