RAF fighter jets escort cargo plane to Stansted Airport

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Two Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have been scrambled to escort a cargo plane to Stansted Airport near London.

The RAF said the jets were scrambled Wednesday afternoon because the plane was "causing concern to air traffic control."

Airport spokesman Mark Davison said the Russian-built Antonov, operated by a Latvian carrier, landed under military escort just after 5 p.m. (1700GMT).

He said the plane was taken to a remote stand while police investigated but that the incident was "stood down" about half an hour later.

People in southern England reported hearing a loud bang on Wednesday afternoon, caused by a sonic boom from the jets.
