Puerto Rico Police Chief Quits Amid Allegations

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico-- Puerto Rico's police chief says he is resigning his post after less than three years on the job.

Jose Figueroa Sancha is stepping down amid sharp criticism over the rising number of killings in the U.S. territory and a recent report from the ACLU alleging police brutality.

Gov. Luis Fortuno said in a statement Saturday that Figueroa is resigning because of unspecified health problems.

Figueroa was appointed chief in November 2008 after working 23 years in the FBI.
Fortuno said retired Col. Jose Luis Rivera will serve as interim police chief.

Puerto Rico is battling a soaring crime rate with 568 killings reported so far this year, compared with 470 reported in the same period last year.
