Puerto Rican returns home after surviving deadly battle at Algeria gas plant

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A Puerto Rican gas worker who survived a deadly terrorist takeover at a natural gas plant in Algeria by hiding under a mattress has returned safely to the island.

Government officials said Tuesday that Wilmer Lebron Ayala is one of seven U.S. citizens who escaped being killed by Islamic militants last week. At least 37 hostages and 29 militants were killed.

Lebron's family lives in the city of Sabana Grande and a city spokesman there says Lebron hid from the terrorists for more than three days. Hiram Vega says Lebron and other workers huddled under mattresses in their dormitory until authorities rescued them.

Vega says the FBI took Lebron to an undisclosed location and ordered him and his family to not talk to the media for security reasons.
