A Ukrainian journalist known for his pro-Russian views has been gunned down in Kiev.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko said in a Facebook post that Oles Buzyna, who was editor-in-chief of a leading daily until March, was killed Thursday afternoon by shots from a passing car.

Buzyna in 2012 ran for a seat in parliament on the Russian party ticket and was known for his pro-Russian views.

Herashchenko said Buzyna was a key witness in a criminal case related to a pro-Russian rally in Kiev that was organized to counter the massive pro-Western protests on Kiev's main square that led then-President Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country last year.
