LONDON (AP) — Prince Philip, still recovering from surgery to his left hand, will celebrate his 89th birthday with a day off.

He originally had been scheduled to attend some official events on Thursday with his wife, Queen Elizabeth II. But he was treated earlier this week for carpal tunnel syndrome, a common painful condition caused by the compression of a nerve in the wrist.

Philip, who is also the Duke of Edinburgh, is expected at a dinner Thursday night and to resume his public engagements on Friday.

A royal gun salute will be fired to mark his birthday.

The queen's official birthday will be observed Saturday during the annual Trooping the Color ceremony. She turned 84 in April, but the public celebration is traditionally held in June.
