Portuguese model's mom defends son in NYC slaying

The mother of a Portuguese model taken into custody in New York following the slaying and castration of a Portuguese celebrity journalist says her son is innocent.

Odilia Pereirinha also told Portugal's TVIndependente television network her son Renato Seabra "was not Carlos Castro's lover."

The 65-year-old Castro was bludgeoned and castrated on Friday in the New York City hotel room he had shared with Seabra. Seabra had not been charged as of Sunday. Friends in New York said they were a couple.

Pereirinha said Sunday before heading to New York that her son "never hid his sexuality: that he is heterosexual." Portugal's Lusa news agency said Monday that Portuguese officials would meet with Seabra.
