Portugal gets 5 bids for concession deals to run Lisbon subway and buses

Published June 15, 2015

Associated Press

Portugal's government says it has received bids from five companies for the concession agreements to run the Lisbon subway and the Lisbon bus company.

Sergio Monteiro, secretary of state for transport, said Monday that Britain's National Express Group PLC, France's Groupe RATP and Spain's Grupo Avanza have presented bids to operate both public transport companies.

He said French company Transdev has tabled a bid to run only the Metropolitano de Lisboa subway, while the Portuguese-Spanish consortium Barraqueiro-TCC has made an offer to run bus company Carris.

Monteiro didn't disclose financial details of the offers to operate the two companies, which are both unprofitable.

The companies' services have regularly been disrupted by walkouts as transport unions have fought the government's privatization plans.
