Pope on European meltdown: Solutions must protect human dignity, only 'capital' worth saving

Published November 17, 2014

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI has some advice for European banking and development officials trying to help the continent get through its economic and financial crisis.

The pontiff says finance and the economy are nothing more than a means to help people realize their full potential and keep their dignity.

Benedict told officials of the European Council's Development Bank during a speech Saturday at the Vatican that human "capital" is what any financial rescue plan must save.

He also contended that Christianity in Europe will allow the continent to keep its laws and social structures responsible and ethical.

Benedict urged those shaping Europe's economy to make the needs of families central to their planning.
