Police: Insurgents kill 2, wound 7 in India's northeast

Police say suspected separatist rebels opened fire at a prayer meeting of Hindi-speaking migrants, killing two of them and wounding seven others in India's troubled remote northeast.

Police officer Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta says the attack took place on Friday in a home in Tinsukia district in Assam state. The attackers fled after firing at some at the religious gathering.

Mahanta blamed the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) for the attack. The group has been fighting for decades for independence from India.

The group, led by Paresh Baruah, operates from hideouts along the state's border with Myanmar and targets Hindi-speaking people from eastern Bihar state, considering them to be representatives of the Indian state.
