Police identify victim in Canada body parts case

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Police on Tuesday identified the victim whose body parts were found scattered around Toronto as a single mother of three who owned a now-defunct spa.

The head, foot and hands of 41-year-old Liu Guanghua were discovered in a river west of Toronto last week. Over the weekend, her two calves, a thigh and an arm were found in a creek in eastern Toronto.

Peel Region Inspector George Koekkoek said all the body parts have been forensically linked to Liu, a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent. She was last seen alive Aug. 10 when she was dropped off at work by friends. Koekkowek said neither she nor the spa were known to police.

The discoveries received extra attention following the case earlier this year of porn actor Luka Magnotta, who is accused of dismembering a Chinese student in Montreal and mailing his body parts to political parties and a school.

Police have ruled out any connection between the cases.

Police still do not know how Liu died. Koekkoek said they don't believe there are other victims.

He said parts of Liu's body have yet to be recovered.
