Police: Car bomb explodes outside police station in attack by Taliban in eastern Afghanistan

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

A police official says Taliban insurgents staged a multi-pronged attack on a police station in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, using a suicide bomber and gunmen to lay siege to the station. One policeman and 10 civilians were wounded.

Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashrakiwal said the attack early Thursday morning took place outside a police station, located near the palatial residence of the provincial Governor Gul Aga Sherzai. The nearby state Radio and Television station was heavily damaged in the explosion.

Mashrakiwal said two bodies of insurgents were laying outside the police station.

Mashrakiwal said the situation is under control, but witnesses in the area said gunfire could still be heard.

In a one-line Pashto- language email to news media, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the attack was staged by Taliban insurgents.
