Police: 2 more people detained in French probe into student's failed attack on church

Published October 14, 2015

Associated Press

A police official says two people have been detained in an investigation into a failed attack on a suburban Paris church.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be identified, said the two men were detained in the Seine-Saint-Denis region Wednesday. France's i-Tele television reported they may have provided logistical help to chief suspect Sid Ahmed Ghlam.

Authorities say Ghlam, a computer science student, planned to attack the church in Villejuif and is suspected in the killing of a woman nearby. He was arrested in April after apparently shooting himself by accident.

Ghlam is in custody on preliminary charges. Authorities have made other arrests in the case.

Investigators have said Ghlam received instructions from someone, possibly in Syria, before implementing the plot.
