NEW DELHI (AP) — A stampede of commuters rushing for trains broke out at a crowded railway station in India's capital, killing two people and injuring nine others Sunday.

Hundreds of passengers suddenly stormed toward a platform after an announcement that a train was arriving at a different area earlier than scheduled, police official Mohammed Iqlaq said.

The dead included a woman and a child, he said.

The station in New Delhi handles hundreds of trains and thousands of passengers each day.

Most rail stations in major Indian cities are crowded throughout the year but get exceptionally packed during the summer months, when schools close for breaks and people travel to visit friends and relatives.
