Poland's president marks NATO anniversary by wishing more US troops in the country

Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski says he would like more U.S. troops in the country to guarantee its security within NATO, which Poland joined 15 years ago this week.

Komorowski marked the anniversary with a visit to an air base in Lask, in central Poland, where a Polish F16 fighter force is based, along with 10 U.S. airmen who support rotating visits of American pilots and aircraft.

On a request that Warsaw made after Russian troops took control of Ukraine's Crimea, some 300 U.S. airmen and a dozen F16 fighters are expected in Poland this week. They will take part in joint exercises.

"We would like to see greater U.S. armed forces involvement on our territory within NATO," Komorowski said.

Formerly a Warsaw Pact nation, Poland joined NATO in 1999.
