Poland's new ruling party blasted for voiding appointment of top court judges

The political conflict surrounding Poland's top court has intensified after the new ruling party had the parliament void a recent appointment of judges.

In a hostile argument that has been going on ever since the conservative Law and Justice party took power last week, the opposition Civic Platform accuses it of breaking the constitution and being the "shame of Europe."

On a Law and Justice motion, the parliament voted late Thursday to declare as non-binding the appointment of five judges for the Constitutional Tribunal by the previous parliament, which had been dominated by Civic Platform.

Law and Justice argues some of the appointments were faulty. It is seeking to appoint its own supporters instead.

The tribunal will rule next week whether the appointments were in line with the constitution.
